Most organisations dabble in AI. Silverchain is going all in.

Speaking with Australian Ageing Agenda on the sidelines of Australian Healthcare Week, Silverchain chief executive Dale Fisher described artificial intelligence as a "two-tiered system" for her organisation — one tier focused on near-term productivity gains, the other on something far bigger: rebuilding what care models look like in the first place.

Two Tiers of AI Investment

The home care and health provider already has multiple pilot projects underway aimed at freeing up care hours by shifting certain tasks to AI. That's the tier most organisations are focused on right now. But Fisher argues the real strategic advantage lies elsewhere — in using AI, which she only half-jokingly called "alien intelligence," to design fundamentally better models of care for the future.

It's a bold bet, and Fisher isn't shy about the scale of disruption she expects. While she's careful to call out the hype cycle around AI, she also predicts it will become the biggest disruption to health — and to the world — within two to three years.

Betting Big on One Platform

That conviction is now baked into Silverchain's strategy through 2030: rather than spreading investment across scattered initiatives, the organisation has committed to one large-scale digital infrastructure build, with AI folded directly into it. It's a consolidation play — one big organisational effort instead of ten small ones.

Sharing the Advantage

What makes this more than a single-provider story is what Silverchain plans to do with what it builds. Fisher says the organisation has no intention of keeping its AI-powered infrastructure to itself. Components of the system, she says, will be made available so smaller aged care and home care providers — the ones without Silverchain's capital — can use the technology too, rather than trying to build their own from scratch.

That's a meaningful signal for a sector where digital maturity varies enormously between large and small providers. Fisher's advice to smaller organisations in the meantime: let the big players make the early investments, but stay close enough to move quickly once the technology is proven.

Silverchain is also actively looking for hospital partners, with Fisher pointing to the interface between hospitals and community-based care as one of the biggest unresolved problems in the system — and one that better AI-enabled infrastructure could help solve.
