Nursing & Midwifery, March 11

1:10 PM Healthcare Workforce Sustainability & Wellbeing: A Veteran-Inclusive Model for Nursing and Midwifery

Health systems across Australia are facing sustained nursing and midwifery workforce shortages, high attrition and increasing psychosocial risk. This session presents a Veteran-inclusive workforce model as a scalable solution, using Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) as a case study. By embedding Veteran-inclusive practices across recruitment, culture, governance and manager capability, MNCLHD demonstrates how health services can strengthen workforce sustainability, wellbeing and leadership while expanding workforce pipelines beyond traditional recruitment approaches.

Key Takeaways

  • Veterans as a workforce solution: Veterans bring highly transferable clinical, leadership and safety capabilities that can help address nursing and midwifery shortages.

  • Systems-level inclusion matters: Embedding Veteran-inclusive practices across policies, management and psychosocial safety delivers benefits for all staff, not just Veterans.

  • Scalable and sustainable impact: The MNCLHD model shows how consistent practice and shared communities of practice can improve retention, wellbeing and workforce resilience across health systems.
